Please Recreate Safely and Responsibly

Safety First!

Nevada is home to some really, REALLY wide open spaces. That means no cell service sometimes and long stretches of highway with no gas stations, and yep, no restrooms.

From wild horse herds, to Rocky Mountain Elk, Mule Deer, Coyote and beyond, some of Nevada’s largest animals in Nevada live in and around Highway 6. Much of the Great Basin comes alive at night. If you’re going so fast that you miss them—or worse, that you can’t when you need to—you’re going too fast.

So please always be prepared for these conditions. Check maps (and use gas pumps and available restrooms accordingly!). Make sure you have a good spare tire and know how to change it. And never, never ever throw a cigarette or match out the window. And only have campfires in established fire pits. Nevada is bone dry and a wildland fire can start in an instant, even from a vehicle backfire.

Plan to go off-pavement? Here’s your checklist (no cheating, check every box):

____ I have a really good paper map (order your free Nevada State map here) and will NOT rely on a generic app.

____ I have a 4-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicle with high clearance.

____ I have checked conditions and I know the dirt or gravel road is dry.

____ I  have checked the weather forecast and am prepared for sudden adverse conditions.

____ I have a good spare tire and know how to change it.

____ I have told friends/family where I’m going and when I expect to return back home.

____ I have more food and water than I think I’ll need.

____ I know my vehicle limits and have enough gas.

____ I’m aware there are critters out there – like rattlesnakes, scorpions, mountain lions and wild horses.

Here’s more need-to-know info.

OK! Have fun and be careful!

Recreate Responsibly

This Land is YOUR Land – please treat it accordingly!

The vast majority of the land in Nevada is owned by YOU. In other words, it is not private property; it’s owned by the American public and is managed by federal agencies for you to get out and enjoy. These lands are priceless so please treat them as such.

    • Carry a bag for trash in your vehicle and dispose of it properly when you can.
    • Stay on the designated trails – blazing your own damages sensitive plants and causes erosion.
    • Know how to camp if you’re going into the backcountry.
    • You know the drill – if you pack it in, then pack it out.
    • Take pictures only (you’ll see some cool stuff) and leave all the natural stuff on the ground.
    • Honor ALL signs, gates and fences.
